Once you know your profected house for the year, the very next question every traditional astrologer asks is: who is the lord of the year? This is the single planet that ends up carrying the most weight for the next twelve months, and identifying it correctly is one of the most important skills in time-lord work. Get the wrong planet, and you will be watching the wrong transits for the entire year.

The basic rule is straightforward: the lord of the year is the planet that rules the sign on the cusp of your profected house, using whole sign houses. If your profection year activates the 5th house and that house falls in Scorpio, Mars (the traditional ruler of Scorpio) is your lord of the year. But traditional astrologers add refinements on top of the basic rule. If a planet is more essentially dignified in that sign than its domicile ruler (for example, sitting in its own exaltation or triplicity there), some traditions give it a share of the rulership too, a concept called co-rulership of the year.

Once you have identified the lord of the year, the next step is to look at everything happening to that planet: its natal condition (is it dignified or afflicted, angular or weak), what house it occupies natally, and crucially, what transits are going to activate it over the coming twelve months. A well-placed lord of the year that also receives a supportive Jupiter transit tends to describe a genuinely good year for that house's themes. A poorly placed lord of the year receiving a hard Saturn transit describes a year where that same house's themes will demand real work.

The lord of the year is also the planet astrologers watch most closely for exact transit hits throughout the year, because those hits tend to mark the specific weeks when the year's theme becomes a concrete, dateable event rather than a vague background feeling. If your lord of the year is Venus and transiting Jupiter conjoins your natal Venus in March, that month becomes a strong candidate for a relationship or financial highlight within your broader yearly theme.

This is why the lord of the year is often described as the single most useful piece of information you can pull from a profection chart. The profected house tells you what topic the year is about. The lord of the year tells you exactly which planet to track for the specific dates that topic will come alive.
